I would like to know what, if anything, is known of the derivation of this surname Jaffe, -ee, ie, and its spelling variations in the western/English alphabet. It seems to arise from somewhere "east bloc", of families with numerous children, then emigrate westward through Germany, thence for the greatest part, to U.S. Does this surname word have a meaning, does it refer to a trade or feudal area, or ??

Seeking information on descendents of Louis and Gertrude Jaffe. Gertrude Jaffe was the daughter of Abraham and Lena Lagofsky Login and the sister of my grandmother, Esther Login Libin. According to the 1920's census Louis and Gertrude were Jewish immigrants from Russia around 1911-1913 and settled in Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey. They had eight children: Freda (1895), Max (1898), Dora (1902), Sadie (1906), Herman (1908), Rosalind (1912), Irving (1914), Milton (1916). Irving and Milton were born in New Jersey, the others in Russia. Gertrude may have died in the 1920's as Louis's wife in the 1930 census is Fannie and there is also a step-daughter, Anita Kaplan, listed in his household. His occupation was given as owner of a turkish bathhouse. If you have information on this family please let me know. We are working on completing a project on the family history and descendents of Abraham and Lena Lagofsky.

I'm trying to trace the descendants of Otto Jaffe, a tailor in Konigsberg, Prussia, who immigrated to the US in the 1870's and settled in Waverly, Rhode Island, where he had a family of six sons, one of whom was Harry Jaffe, my grandfather, born around 1888. Harry wandered around the western states as a teenager, working as a miner, and enlisted in the Army in California, before winding up as a butcher married to Dora Botwinnik. All of he, his father and his brothers (I believe) wound up in the New York area later on in the teens of the 20th century. Any information would be appreciated.

This is one of the (3?) JaffIE lines in the US. No info on Rose's maiden name or if either had any US siblings. Rose died about 1942 at age 85, I don't know yet when Charles died. 11 offspring born late 18th century were Phillip & Samuel (twins), Bess (married an Ed Carson), Eva (Married a Willie Weinberg [something to do with making sugar fake glass to shatter for Hollywood films]; moved to CA), Edward, Louis (attorney/Cook County IL judge)(married Norma; retired in the 1960s, both died in CA), and Joseph (married Miriam). Miriam remarried, the children have no idea whatever happened to Joseph. Those 2 generations otherwise were born in NY and lived in Chicago, I believe. There is some info on some of the next generation's children available.

There are a number of versions of the ancestry of Rabbi Mordekhai Jaffe the "Levush": that of the Eiger family, the late Paul Jacoby, tables in the Jewish Encyclopedia and in some of the classic nineteenth century genealogy books. I am interested in locating primary sources for the Jaffe ancestry, including perhaps the alleged descent from Rashi. There is much confusion in the sources. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has made a study of this subject. Chaim Freedman Petah Tikvah, Israel

I am searching for siblings and ancestors of Moses Simon JAFFE, born about July 1843 in Russia, possibly in the region of Bessarabia. The youngest of thirteen children, his parents died when young, and he wound up working in Prussia and other German regions. He married Rosa HIRSCH (b. abt. 12 Dec 1851 in Prussia) in 1872 in Berlin, Germany. I believe they moved to Koenigsburg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), where six children were born. They moved to the United States in 1883, were in Omaha, NE with relatives of Rosa HIRSCH JAFFE around 1885 to about 1889, moved to CA in 1889 and settled in the San Jose and San Francisco areas. Moses JAFFE later moved to Sacramento, CA where he died in 1913. My apologies for what is a long post, but if you believe you may have information, e-mail me at mrsandman29@hotmail.com. Many thanks!

My maiden name is Jaffe and I am trying to research my family history. My father is Louis I.Jaffe, his father was Leon Jaffe who was born in Poland in 1897. According to the SS-5 his father was Selig Jaffe and his mother was Ida. I don't have a terrific copy of the SS-5 so I can't make out the name of the town Leon was from. It looks like "SLUPIN"? I am not familiar with Polish towns so I could be wrong about that part. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Mother was born in Aug, 1917 in London England, Freda Jaffe. She had two brothers, Jack and Leo. My uncles and my Mother are now deceased. My Uncle Jack had one son, Henry, I believe he lives in London. I am not real sure of this but I think my Mother's Mother's maiden name was Ignatowski, Millicent. My Grandfather's name was Solomon. My Mother married Rudy Tunnat in Wales in September, 1947. She had three sons, Paul, Robert and Peter. I guess what I would like to know is about Henry Jaffe. He is probably in his 60s, and I believe he lives in London, England.

My great grandfather was Barnet Jaffe born about 1879 in Riga, Latvia, died Dec 12 1968 in Shoreditch, England. He is buried in Rainham Jewish Cemetery but has no stone and they have no records on him. There is also no info available through any synagogues etc. His fathers name was Zalkin Yaffa or Yaffe. I believe they were illiterate at least to English as their marriage certificate is all signed with X's so any spelling of the last name is based on the translators interpretation. I have seen is Jaffe/Jaffa/Yahfa/Iofe/Yaffa/Yaffe. He married Etia (Ettie, Hetty) Goldschmidt born in about 1880 in Russia ( I am thinking the Ukraine but can't definitely confirm). She is the daughter of Shraga Nisan "Philip" Goldschmidt and is also buried in Rainham, died 12 Dec 1944 in Middlesex England. Based on her grave I believe she had one sister and at least 2 brothers. I am hoping to find info on Barnet and Ettie's parents and siblings etc, and also find descendants. Their children were Philip, Alexander and Rose Jaffe, Hyman, Lily and Harry Jaffe. All born in England. Philip is my grandfather and married Catherine Iliffe Alexander married Pauline Goldstein Rose married Hussein DJemal Hyman married Rose Goldberg Lily married Jemal Emir Hussein and Paul Claret Harry married Hilda Spectorofsky

I have been doing research on Jaffe family from Riga Latvia. Two brothers, Phillip and Jack ( maybe Jacob) immigrated to Chicago in around 1905. Phillip stayed in Chicago and worked in a radiator company. He married Emma Arenstein and had 4 children. Isadore (Irving), Seymour, Florence, and Sharon (Ida). Emma had a sister whose married name was Fannie Peskind. I have not been able to find records on Jack who family states went to California around 1930-40's. Jack was in LA in 1945 where he met my mother. Any information on Jack especially would help.
